It feels like I’ve always wanted to expe­ri­ence Falling­wa­ter, Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic mas­ter­piece in the rolling hills near Pitts­burgh. This is the first day of a 10 day road trip my sis­ter Mary Lynn and I are tak­ing. She is an extra­or­di­nary gar­dener so the trip promises to be gar­den intensive.

Impres­sions of Falling­wa­ter: Wright’s use of the amaz­ing set­ting is impec­ca­ble. The set­ting is a tan­gle of trees deep in the Allegheny Moun­tains. The house is a jew­el­box, com­pleted in 1939. Named for the water­fall that runs beneath it, the house hov­ers, belong­ing nei­ther to earth or sky. I know that sounds extremely fan­ci­ful, but in actu­al­ity I could never really describe the expe­ri­ence of tour­ing this “sculp­ture for liv­ing”. I could barely tear myself away after 2 hours. If you are inter­ested in archi­tec­ture, nature or even human nature, it’s a once in a life­time experience!
