It feels like I’ve always wanted to experience Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic masterpiece in the rolling hills near Pittsburgh. This is the first day of a 10 day road trip my sister Mary Lynn and I are taking. She is an extraordinary gardener so the trip promises to be garden intensive.
Impressions of Fallingwater: Wright’s use of the amazing setting is impeccable. The setting is a tangle of trees deep in the Allegheny Mountains. The house is a jewelbox, completed in 1939. Named for the waterfall that runs beneath it, the house hovers, belonging neither to earth or sky. I know that sounds extremely fanciful, but in actuality I could never really describe the experience of touring this “sculpture for living”. I could barely tear myself away after 2 hours. If you are interested in architecture, nature or even human nature, it’s a once in a lifetime experience!

Mary Lynn and I are both nursery geeks, so there should be some good flower-plant-nursery stuff in the days to come! On to Mystic, Connecticut and lobster rolls tomorrow.

I went to Fallingwater with my mom and aunt when I was 16 and just learning to drive. I remember thinking that the kitchen was incredibly small given the humongous and magical entertaining spaces! It really is a special place. So glad you got to go!
