Magical Laguna Nursery

A mossy fountain at Laguna Nursery

A mossy fountain at Laguna Nursery

Ruben Flores pulled Laguna Nursery back from the brink of extinction. The 50 year old nursery on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach was fated to be torn down and… (stop here if your are faint-hearted) turned into a commercial storage facility. Basically Ruben couldn’t let that happen! So he bought the property and kept the original name. Laguna Nursery is now stocked to the gills with plants, flowers, fountains, containers, pots, art, antiques and chandeliers, all of which meet the high standards of his discerning eye. This place is worth a special trip to Laguna Beach just to wander about and get ideas from the creative vignettes Ruben has created. One “room” has a carpet of “plant” material that is both practical and impractical at the same time. Mainly it just looks great. I have my eye on a 19th century sink that is straight out of “Gosford Park” — though first I’ll need to find a sugar daddy ! A lovely fountain dripping with moss mimics a Monet painting. Everywhere you look there is magic!

Ruben gives back to the community in another way. Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. he gives informal walking tours of the neighborhood gardens. The tours are free and last about 90 minutes (call to check though). He wants the public to see the plants they buy in a mature setting, and who could argue with that.

Celebrating Red and Green

IMG_0186Ah, Christmas in Los Angeles.….….US Customs got a surprise when they found 316,000 glass bongs disguised as Christmas ornaments at the Los Angeles harbor. The cargo had been described as glass figures and Christmas ornaments. But I digress.….

I love red and green, in fabrics, jewelry, flowers, succulents, really everything. But the color combination is so often associated with Christmas that I feel like I can’t use it as freely as I would like. I love using red and green over the holidays but in a fresh way. In the arrangement in my kitchen I have combined red and green gladiolas with a South African plant I grow in my garden, leucadendron. A member of the protea family, this plant is delightful with it’s red stems and green foliage and flowerlike bracts. It’s carried exstensively at the LA Flower market for use as a fill in for floral arrangements. Leucadendron is easy to grow with full sun and moderate water, and readily available at most SoCal nurseries right now. Another gorgeous red/green flower combination is a variety of kangaroo paw, if you can find it. I got mine at Australian Plant Nursery in Ojai — you can see a photo in the Ventura Nursery category.

I called some nurseries on my database and the following have a selection of leucadendrons: Burkard Nursery, San Gabriel Nursery, (East Valley), Sperling Nursery (West Valley), Marina Garden Center (Los Angeles). And if you are near Ventura/Ojai, Jo O’Connell of Australian Native Plant Nursery has an unparalleled inventory. It’s best to call ahead to be sure.

Grow in Venice and Cosentino’s at Pacific Coast Highway and Los Flores in Malibu tell me they have terrific wreaths among many holiday decorations. Rolling Green Nursery always has the greatest holiday plants, wreaths, ornaments — it just goes on and on! They just opened a second location: 7505 Beverly Blvd @ Gardener, Hollywood, 90036, (323) 9344500.

Last but not least, all the employees at the nurseries I called while looking for leucadendrons and holiday decorations were so helpful and some of them called me back - try that at Home Depot! Hope you have happy holidays no matter what you celebrate, even if you just love red and green like me!!!!

Giving Thanks for the Seed Savers Exchange!

Heirloom produce at Walker Farms, Vermont

Happy Thanksgiving! What better way to celebrate this most food centric of holidays than to honor the Seed Savers Exchange! This company is an American treasure, and speaks to all the values that we as gardeners hold dear. Founded in Missouri in 1975 by the Whealy family, SSE, now located in Iowa, has grown to a world wide network dedicated to saving the world’s diverse but endangered garden heritage for future generations. I just received the 2010 catalog of heirloom seeds, books and gifts and it is fantastic! The tomatoes, the beans, lettuces, squashes, melons, peppers and flowers — I have never seen so many beautiful and diverse fruits and vegetables. The catalog also contains SSE’s story, member profiles, Heritage Farm information and the 2010 Calender of Events, which includes an annual conference and cookout. If you are looking for a gift or just love gardening literature, SSE has a terrific collection of books, including The Heirloom Tomato, Complete Book of Gourd Carving, The Joy of Pickling and many more.

In closing, I would like to quote the Seed Savers Exchange catalog: ‘Supply of seeds is expected to be extremely tight in 2010, due to bad weather and crop failures. Order seeds early.” In addition, “For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds and plants”.….…. THE VERY BEST REASON TO GET YOUR SEEDS FROM THE SEED SAVERS EXCHANGE!!!!

Friesians and flowers

Dalias at Friesians in Mystic

We spent the last 3 days at a small guest house in the south of Vermont, on the grounds of a Friesian horse farm. Friesians are incredibly versatile black coach horses. Not only do they pull coaches with style and panache but they can jump and do dressage. Here at Friesians of Majesty you can wake up in the morning and look out the window at the mares and foals playing in the fields, take a trail ride (I did) or just hang out with the horses. It is such a privilege to stay here with the LaBrie family…and so hard to leave.

I must admit I feel like I’m on another planet — everything is so different here from SoCal. The landscape, people, architecture, priorities — it will be a big adjustment getting back!
